UT Chancellor Responds to Rumors of Firing President Bill Powers

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa says he has not been told by regents to fire the president of the University of Texas at Austin.

Cigarroa issued a statement Thursday in response to rumors that regents Chairman Gene Powell wanted Bill Powers fired in a dispute over tuition rates at the system’s flagship campus.

Powers was critical of the regents last week for freezing tuition rates for most students at the Austin campus for the next two years.

A Wednesday night blog post on Texas Monthly magazine’s website cited an anonymous source saying Powell asked Cigarroa to recommend firing Powers, which Cigarroa refused to do. A spokesman for Cigarroa said the chancellor will not comment beyond the issued statement.

A spokesman for Powers declined comment.
