Lawmakers Blast Obama Keystone Pipeline Rejection

HOUSTON (AP) _ Republican lawmakers blasted President Barack Obama’s decision to reject a proposed Canada-to-Texas pipeline while environmental groups praised the move.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says Obama’s rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline “will do nothing but extend the jobs crisis and send thousands of U.S. jobs and valuable oil overseas.”

Environmental groups in Texas praised the move saying the tar sands that would have arrived in Texas for refining would have further polluted the Houston area’s already dirty air.

The Texas chapter of the group Public Citizen says the Obama administration had to reject the pipeline after Congress imposed a 60-day deadline, not enough time to conduct an informed review. The group also says the pipeline would have crossed over Texas’ key aquifers and the risk of spills was too great.
