Criminal Charges Possible in Gulf Oil Spill

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ The legal fallout from the massive Gulf oil spill isn’t over. Experts who have studied investigations by various panels say chances have increased that criminal charges could be filed against some of the companies involved.

Several analysts came forward with this prediction after a portion of a presidential oil spill commission’s report was made public Thursday.

The environmental disaster depicted in the report doesn’t blame any individual or group. That means in the end — no one may go to prison for the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

But criminal charges could be brought — in addition to huge fines that companies like BP, Transocean and Halliburton already face.

The Justice Department is conducting a criminal probe over the April 20 disaster in the Gulf Mexico, but has not made any announcement about charges.
