Bryan Elementary Principal Wins $25K Award
Featured Stories, News Thursday, October 21st, 2010Ben Milam Elementary School principal Tracy Spies is the winner of a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.
Tracy Spies’ first comments after her name was announced.
Spies was surprised with the announcement at a school assembly Thursday attended by Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott.
In a news release, Bryan ISD says The Milken Educator Award recognizes Spies for her exceptional work “as a model for the state and nation.”
Spies is one of 55 educators nationwide sharing in cash prizes totaling more than $1.3 million. Her recognition is part of the Milken Family Foundation’s 24th annual National Notifications Tour.
Tracy tells WTAW’s Bill Oliver she didn’t know why the Governor was coming to her school.
Spies has been Principal at Milam since August 2006. About half of Milam’s teachers have one to five years of experience. Milam participates in a program developed by the Milken Foundation. Spies was cited for her team-teaching and modeling for novice teachers.
